FBI and DC Police Stonewalling Information On Chandra
Levy and Congressman Condit Relationship
Los
Angeles, CA - July 5, 2001 - "The laptop, recovered from Chandra Levy's
Washington D.C. apartment, should provide answers to her relationship
with Congressman Condit, but the FBI and DC Police obviously don't
think it's relevant to finding her - or they'd tell us", says Mark
McLaughlin, Computer Forensic Examiner and Expert Witness.
"You
know Levy and Condit probably sent emails to each other, it's the
customary way to communicate within the government. The smoking gun of
their relationship would probably be found on Condit's PC. But as the
DC Police Chief said, we're not the sex police", McLaughlin adds.
Computer
forensic software can recover email or even fragments of messages, even
if they're deleted. When a user hits delete, the computer only removes
the first character of the filename, leaving the file intact.
Overwriting deleted data is the only way information is destroyed, but
even then some fragments could remain.
Additionally,
there are many hidden areas of data within a PC that computer users
don't even know about. Forensic software allows experienced Examiner's,
like McLaughlin, to search recovered data for keywords. "I'd simply
enter the word Condit, his personal telephone number or any other
seemingly private information and it would return each hit of the
search term".
